LinuxExpo, Shanghai, China, Jun 2000

from Horms -

Wensong and I both spoke at Linux Expo Shanghai in June 2000. I spent about a week there and aside from visiting the show, Wensong and his brother Wenzhuo showed me around Shanghai.

Shanghai has traditionally been an economic centre of the East. With the re-unification of Hong Kong with China and the relatively low cost of well educated staff, Shanghai is seeing rapid growth in economic activity and in turn the city itself.

Pudong is a rapidly developing area of Shanghai that included Jin Moa Tower, the 3rd tallest building in the world, eclipsing its then closest rival, the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York by only a few meters and in turn eclipsed by only a few meters by Sears Tower in Chicago and in turn the Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

The Shanghai Exhibition Centre was build in the 1950s and is based on Russian architecture. It is very large and rather noisy building much better suited to exhibits than presentations.

Zhouzhung is an ancient town about 1 hour out of Shanghai. It is built on a series of rivers, not dissimilarly to Venice. Wensong was quite taken by the boats the had. We took a ride on one and he even had a go at paddling us up the river.
